What is Weeping Tile?
Weeping tile (also called a drain tile or perimeter drain system) is a perforated drainage pipe installed around the perimeter of your foundation to collect and redirect groundwater before it can build up pressure against your walls and floor. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with actual tile β it's a drainage system that "weeps" water away from your home.
Many Ontario homes, especially those built before the 1980s, have clay weeping tile that has collapsed, become clogged with roots, or simply failed over time. Interior weeping tile installation is a cost-effective alternative to full exterior excavation.
Interior vs. Exterior Weeping Tile
While exterior weeping tile is the gold standard for waterproofing, interior installation offers a practical and highly effective solution β often at significantly lower cost and with minimal disruption to landscaping.
π‘ Interior Weeping Tile Benefits
Interior systems can be installed regardless of season, without disturbing your landscaping, and are typically faster to install. When combined with a properly sized sump pump, they provide reliable, long-term protection.
Our Interior Weeping Tile Process
- Break concrete floor around the perimeter of the basement (typically 12β18 inches wide)
- Excavate to below the footing level to expose the foundation base
- Install perforated drain pipe in a bed of clean clear stone
- Apply dimple mat or drainage membrane to direct wall seepage down into the drain
- Connect the drainage pipe to a new or existing sump pit
- Re-pour the concrete over the drain system for a clean, finished look
When Is Interior Weeping Tile the Right Choice?
- Exterior excavation is not feasible (decks, patios, finished grade)
- High water table causing hydrostatic pressure from below
- Failed or non-existent original drainage system
- Combined with crack repair for a complete waterproofing solution
- Budget-conscious homeowners needing proven protection
