Mould in Your Basement — Cause & Solution

Basement mould is almost always a symptom of chronic moisture — a wet basement, poor ventilation, or both. Simply cleaning the mould without fixing the underlying water problem means it will grow back. At Maximum Contracting, we address mould as part of a complete basement moisture solution.

Why Basements Get Mould

  • Chronic water seepage through foundation cracks or walls
  • High humidity from hydrostatic pressure and floor moisture
  • Poor or nonexistent ventilation in finished or semi-finished basements
  • Previous flooding events that weren't fully dried
  • Organic materials (wood framing, drywall) exposed to persistent moisture

Health Risks of Basement Mould

Mould spores circulate through your home's air and can cause or worsen:

  • Respiratory issues, asthma and allergic reactions
  • Chronic sinus congestion and headaches
  • Eye, nose and throat irritation
  • Symptoms that worsen at home and improve when away

If you smell musty odours in your basement or notice dark patches on walls, joists, or framing, have it assessed promptly. Mould colonies grow rapidly once established, especially on organic materials like wood and drywall.

Our Mould Remediation Process

1

Assessment & Source Identification

We assess the extent of mould growth and identify the moisture source — foundation crack, weeping tile failure, sump pump issue, or condensation problem.

2

Fix the Water Source First

Mould remediation without fixing the water source is temporary. We recommend and complete the appropriate waterproofing repair (crack injection, weeping tile, etc.) before or alongside mould treatment.

3

Safe Mould Removal

Affected materials are safely removed and disposed of using appropriate containment methods to prevent spore spread throughout the home.

4

Treatment & Prevention

Surfaces are treated with anti-microbial agents. Structural surfaces that cannot be removed (concrete, block) are cleaned and treated to prevent regrowth.

Mould Remediation & Insurance Claims

Many homeowner insurance policies cover mould remediation when caused by a sudden and accidental water event. We can work with your insurance company to document the damage and assist with your claim. Call us to discuss your specific situation.
